Sunny Sunday Afternoons in November
At the last minute my daughter changed the plans for yesterday. We had considered getting together with my brother's family, or getting out in the beautiful November weather. Right before brunch, My oldest tripped over a log and cut her underarm on another log in the yard. The slice peeled back the skin on her arm revealing everything under her dermis. After taking one look at it, I decided that, even though she wasn't screaming bloody murder, we should spend the sunny afternoon of my daughter's birthday in a med-center meeting nurses, EMTs and PAs.
We had contemplated taking in a movie, or getting the bikes or kayaks out for one last jaunt in the sunny 72 degree day. Instead we spent our afternoon at or driving to and from the med-center in Grand Rapids. The counter lady asked me questions about her injury and what was her birthday. When I responded,
"Today" the entire waiting room and anyone standing near by resounded with a choir of, "Awwwww". Right after, friends from church came in to have stitches removed from their daughter's finger. I think that calmed my daughter down a little to see another little girl's stitches and hear they weren't so bad. Holy Cow the girl was a trouper, though. She only really screamed when the PA was numbing the area. She more complained about being tickled under her underarm. I would have probably whimpered at that. Sixteen stitches later, having received the bill, we headed home. Now comes the daily re-wrapping, dosing her with Keflex for 7 days and in 2 weeks, heading back to the med-center to have the "pretty blue" stitches removed. When I wrote in my first post that I'd be potentially discussing events in my kids' lives, I never expected to be addressing med center visits. From the day my 3 year old son said, "Dad, watch!" and jumped from the second story of the kids swing-set/play-fort, I always assumed it would be him. We did actually go to the med center after he bruised the inside of his hip a couple years ago. That's 6 hours I'll never get back. He screamed the entire time. I bet my girl remembers yesterday for a LONG time. Especially since it happened on her birthday.
